I’m signing this because death penalty is against every human rights! It’s not an answer for anything, and how do killing someone outlines what others tragedies happen?? And who is it to deside who deserves to live and who’s not?There are numerous reasons why the death penalty should be made illegal, both from an ethical, legal, practical, and societal perspective. Here are just some examples:
1. Violation of Human Rights
The death penalty a violation of human rights, particularly the right to life and the right to be free from cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “everyone has the right to life, liberty, and personal security.” Taking someone’s life as a form of punishment is contrary to this fundamental right.
2. Risk of Wrongful Convictions
One of the most compelling reasons to abolish the death penalty is the risk of wrongful convictions—that an innocent person may be executed. History has shown that mistakes can occur in the justice system, whether due to insufficient evidence, mistaken witnesses, or even intentional wrongful prosecution. Modern DNA technology has led to the exoneration of several people who were previously sentenced to death. The problem is that once an innocent person is executed, the damage is irreversible!
3. No Proven Deterrent Effect
Rresearch has shown that there is no reliable evidence that the death penalty is more effective at deterring crime than life imprisonment. Many countries without the death penalty even have lower homicide rates than those that still practice it. This suggests that other factors, such as social conditions, economic stability, and effective crime prevention, play a more crucial role in reducing crime.
4. Unfairness and Discrimination
The death penalty is often applied unfairly and can be influenced by factors such as race, socioeconomic status, and the quality of legal representation. Studies in the United States have shown that people from minority groups, are more likely to be sentenced to death. Additionally, poor individuals often cannot afford experienced attorneys, which can affect the outcome of their case. This results in the death penalty being arbitrary and discriminatory in practice.
5. Psychological and Emotional Burden
The death penalty not only inflicts pain on the convicted individual but also on their families and those who must carry out the execution. The guards, doctors, and others involved in the process can experience significant psychological stress as a result of participating in taking someone’s life. Studies have shown that those involved in executions may suffer from post-traumatic stress and depression.
6. Life Imprisonment as an Alternative
Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is a viable alternative to the death penalty. It ensures that dangerous criminals are kept away from society while also allowing for the possibility to correct mistakes if new information or evidence emerges later. By using life imprisonment instead of the death penalty, we avoid the irreversible consequences of wrongful convictions.
7. The Death Penalty is More Expensive than Life Imprisonment
It is a common misconception that the death penalty is a cheaper solution than keeping someone imprisoned for life. In fact, studies show that death penalty cases are significantly more expensive than cases resulting in life sentences. This is due to longer trials, multiple appeals, and the extensive costs of ensuring a fair process. The resources spent on death penalty cases could instead be used for crime prevention, rehabilitation, or support for victims.
8. Moral and Ethical Concerns
The death penalty raises profound ethical questions about the state’s right to take a life. Many argue that it is paradoxical to punish murder with murder and that carrying out the death penalty is a form of state-sanctioned violence. To maintain a moral society, the state should set an example by promoting respect for life, not by taking it.
So my Conclusion;
There are many strong reasons to abolish the death penalty. From the risk of wrongful convictions and discrimination to the lack of deterrent effect and the high costs, there are many compelling arguments against this form of punishment. Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is a more humane, fair, and effective alternative that also allows for the correction of mistakes. The death penalty has no place in a modern, civilized society that values human rights and justice.
Abolishing the death penalty would be an important step towards a more just and compassionate world.
